SYNTHETIC LUBRICANTS: 20K -
THE OIL OF THE FUTURE
The interest in synthetic oils and their
dramatic sales increase is solid testimony to motorists' worldwide acceptance of these
synthesized compounds. Their ability to increase fuel economy, decrease oil consumption,
extend oil change intervals, operate effectively at high temperatures, yet flow easily in
subzero weather, is why industry marketing experts predict a 15% share of the total motor
oil market in the next 15 years, compared to the current 2-3% share today. All this
despite the higher prices synthetic oils have been commanding... from $5 to $6 a quart!
There must be a reason. After all we are
talking about an annual $4 Billion market in the U.S., growing to $5.5 Billion by the year
2000. That's a 27% increase and synthetic oils will take their well deserved share. After
all, the majority of consumer mileage is racked up in severe stop-and-go traffic and over
many short trips. Also we are all aware of the severe stress on an engine when started
first time in the morning when lubrication is not yet adequately dispersed to protect
metal surfaces.
So lets take a look at what synthetics are:
Typical motor oils are produced by
separating light and heavy "crude" oil into various grades through distillation
in the refining process. But, synthetic motor oils are produced (synthesize means
combining several small elements) by reacting various organic chemicals and/or blending
two or more hydrocarbon compounds together, to produce a thermally stable base stock with
pour points to as low as -50 degrees F. Crude based stocks may stop pouring at 25 degrees
F. A vast difference.
Lower viscosity (thinness) of synthetics is
another feature compared to traditional motor oils with high (thick) viscosity that breaks
down under high temperature. Synthetics withstand higher temperatures while easily holding
their viscosity.
The skilled compounding of a synthetic oil
to compete against conventional motor oil at much lower prices would not make economic
sense since it is an expensive process to produce. Therefore the higher performance
ability and operating advantages must justify the higher retail prices of synthetic oils.
But do those high prices meet the
performance claims of synthetic oils on the the market today? Lets look at some of the
claims being made by the brands being marketed today and the basic premise for those
claims:
Generally, current brands all attempt to
improve available lubricants, or coat the surfaces to be lubricated, with a slippery
compound. There are four main areas in which these products fall. They are:
- THICKENERS: There are products marketed as thickeners or extenders to
lubrication. They act by making the lubricant more viscous, but do not improve the
qualities of lubrication outside normal existing parameters.
- MOLYBDENUM: There are products marketed as molybdenum based
"antiknock" or lubricant additives. Molybdenum is a silvery metallic chemical
used in alloys. It consists of spherical shaped particles that fill in the irregular
surfaces, and act as a barrier between the surfaces to be lubricated. These spheres can
abrasively affect the surface, and can also reduce the tolerances and clearances in oil
way paths.
- LEAD OR GRAPHITE: Other available products incorporate a lead or graphite base as an
additive. Graphite is a soft form of carbon. It also fills in the irregular surfaces, and
acts as a barrier between the lubricated surfaces. It has a tendency to harden with heat,
and fracture into pumice like particles. It has been known to induce excessive wear on
surfaces to be lubricated. Lead is a heavy metal and is highly toxic. It is banned as a
gasoline additive in many countries, and is being phased out throughout most of the
world.
- TEFLON/PTFE: An additional group of additives available are based on Teflon/PTFE
component. This is a polymer used for non sticking, slippery coating. The surface to be
lubricated is coated with a thin layer of polymer. The Teflon has been known to detach
itself from the surface in flakes and string of particles. This will clog oil passages and
filters. Dupont, the manufacturer of Teflon/PTFE, and General Motors do not recommend it
for lubrication.

FOLLOWING IS THE ACTUAL
LAB TEST RESULTS
CONDUCTED BY AN INDEPENDENT U.S. LAB. OIL ANALYSIS WAS DONE ON DRAIN OIL SAMPLES FROM
FLEET OF BUSES .
THESE BUSES WERE OPERATING IN HARSH
ENVIRONMENT,WITH STOP AND GO TRAFFIC.
TEST INDICATES THAT GLOBAL 20K ADDITIVE REDUCES THE WEAR IN THE ENGINE,
THUS INCREASING THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE,
AND LOWERING THE MAINTENANCE COST.
CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT GLOBAL 20K ADDITIVE
INCREASES THE OIL CHANGE INTERVALS, AND
REDUCES THE ENGINE WEAR,ACTUAL OPERATING COST SAVINGS WERE MORE THAN 30% PER BUS.

WHAT ABOUT GLOBAL 20K
SYNTHETIC LUBRICANTS?
WHAT IS THE BIG
DIFFERENCE?
GLOBAL 20K ULTRA PERFORMANCE
additive and motor oils are a new and totally different solution!
They do not contain any
particulate, they have no filling to shift and clog the engine oil ways,
no coating to detach and
harden and abrase the engine internal part's smooth surfaces.
They actually modify the
surface molecules of ferrous based metals inside the engine to three to five microns deep.
They do not fill in the
irregular surface or coat it. "Global 20K Ultra Performance" additive and motor
oils produce
smoother and harder
surfaces inside the engine, which will have many benefits as listed below.
